John Steel very kindly submits This Day in History records for several years. These get many "hits" on the website.

Forgive me for having a brag for a special day for myself which fell on this Saturday, May 30th, long before our present team members were born (well, except perhaps JS)

The following is from the match report as printed in a Wakefield newspaper:-

Lofthouse v Whitkirk

Hoping to continue their winning sequence and so ensure participation in the end of season play-off for the championship, Lofthouse had Whitkirk, unbeaten this season, as visitors on Saturday. But the Leeds Road side failed in their endeavour.

Put in to bat on a good wicket, Lofthouse failed to get a good start. For, with only 8 runs scored, Bretherick (4) was very well caught at slip from the bowling of Gahan, who opened the attack with Jessop as his partner.

Audsley was the new batsman and with Abbey, set about restoring the fortunes of the home team.

Runs were very hard to come by against an accurate attack, and though the score was carried to 53 before Abbey (19), was caught at slip by Gahan. The next wicket fell with only one more run added. The fourth wicket fell at 71 when Audsley (34) was unluckily bowled off his pads.

When Hartley (38) was bowled as he hit out at Gahan in an effort to increase the tempo of the run getting which had been altogether too slow in the early part of the innings, unfortunately none of the remaining batsmen were able to make any progress.

When the 47 overs were completed the final score was 149 for 8, with Handley unbeaten for 44.

Jack Gahan was the most successful bowler with 5 for 43.

Lofthouse made an encouraging start against a team which always has had a good batting line-up.

Cullen, who opened with Metcalfe, a century maker in the holiday matches, was bowled by Cooper without a run on the board.

With the score at 15, Cooper got a ball to lift to the handle of Metcalfes bat and he was caught at slip.

Bannister and Beer then put on 21 before Beer (5) was caught at silly mid-on, and at 41 Bannister (21) was bowled.

Gahan and D. Ashworth then put on 39 before Ashworth (14) was beaten by Audsley and stumped.

So, the game was wide open with half the side out for 80.

Gahan went merrily on his way and literally won the match on his own, finishing with 97 not out, including 4 sixes and 10 fours.

The Lofthouse bowling figures were Cooper 2 for 63(he was the chief sufferer from fielding errors), Thorp 2 for 39 and Audsley 2 for 22.

Coming in at 41 for 4, J. Gahan scored 97 of the 111 runs added, including every one of the last 72 runs.
