Gildersome 2nd XI v East Leeds 2nd XI 22 April 2017

Report by Danny Thewlis

After choosing to bowl 1st on a good looking pitch for the 1st game of the season, East Leeds bowled well early on. Both Michael Shelton and Adam Farnell kept things extremely tight. Frustration to increase the run rate for Gildersome resulted in some wild slogs from their left handed opener, paying off initially with a couple of 6's to the leg side. Michael Shelton stuck to his task well though and got his man with a solid catch from Wajid Shafiq. A superb opening spell from Adam Farnell, including a dropped catch behind the stumps unfortunately was cut short due to injury. Despite an opening spell of 6 overs for just 11 runs, Adam was forced to leave field with  shoulder and wrist injuries, meaning he could take no further part in the game. After 2 very poor overs from Daniel Thewlis it was time to turn to spin. Two great spells of bowling from both Sam Thewlis (9 overs 1 for 43) and Bobby Mushtaq (12 overs 2 for 60). Both bowlers very unlucky not to bag more wickets due to poor fielding including 3 dropped catches off the bowling off  Bobby. Including a run out from a John Dyson under-arm handbag throw, made to look good with some good work from Sam Thewlis and despite fielding with only 10 men for the majority of the innings, East Leeds were able to restrict Gildersome to a score of 180 for 6.

East Leeds Started positively with the bat, John Steel was the 1st to fall though getting caught on the back foot LBW. John Dyson and Bobby Mushtaq steadied the ship and progressed East Leeds to a strong position. Following some excellent shots and positive attitude John was the next to fall for 44. This unfortunately led to a middle order collapse with Bobby Mushtaq (14), Martin Kent (0), Adam Lines (4), Aaron Pearce (6) and Wajid Shafiq (0) all falling cheaply. Last hope was Daniel Thewlis (19), but a rash  poor shot slogging to leg the side would end any hope of an East Leeds victory.

Some solid bowling was let down in the field with a number of catches going down, combined with some poor batting, with the majority of wickets being given away. Despite the disappointing loss, there were some excellent positives to take from the game. Michael Shelton and Adam Farnell were fantastic with the new ball and deserved more. Spin twins Bobby Mushtaq and Sam Thewlis were superb in partnership despite a very short boundary and only 10 fielders. John Dyson looked superb with the bat and given the support from the likes of John Steel, Bobby Mushtaq, Daniel Thewlis, Martin Kent and Adam Lines, there should a boat load of runs coming our way.
